I don't use these for a car roof rack I use them either strapped to the kayak in the back of my truck bed or just sitting on the garage floor when the kayak is not in the wall rack. I use a pair of 8' x1" lashing straps that I got at my local big box home store to secure these to the kayak when they are in the back of the truck.
