Caesar, the original ape from the first film is long gone. Apes have become the dominant race with numerous clans and fighting. Humans have become largely inarticulate and are subjugated. The theme of this film is an attempt to find a way that apes and humans can live amicably. It has a cohesive plot and the effects and make up/CGI are absolutely stunning. I was a big fan of the original series with Roddy Macdowell and didn’t think a reboot would have the same impact. But with advances in technology, the film industry is able to create phenomenal landscapes and scenes, way beyond the often staged and set backdrops of the early films. This film follows the essence of the original story,but takes it right into the 21st century. It works well as a standalone but if you’ve missed earlier films in the reboot series, they’re well worth watching first to see how the strain has developed.
