Penny Dreadful - The Ongoing Series Volume 2: The Beauteous Evil

The artwork for this comic book continuation is really striking and really captures the mood of the series. The characters look just like their television counterparts and the colours are stunning.For those who feel that Penny Dreadful ended too soon and that there were still stories to tell about Vanessa, Ethan, Dorian, Lily, Catriona, Dr Jekyll and the gang, then this will be right up your street. One of the fun things for me with the original series was debating just what Vanessa was - Amunet or something much older, as Vanessa once professed during the séance scene in season 1. Well, this series has some fun with teasing just who Vanessa was reincarnating and of course why she is relentlessly persued by the forces of darkness. Lily, Dorian and Jekyll's stories are given a proper continuation; well, the latter two is probably more teased at this stage, but Lily is really getting front and centre, which is great for fans of the character.Of course, there are the odd moments that don't really work (for me at least) including some hokey stuff with Sir Malcolm, but it's forgivable.A new monster, The Mummy, has been introduced to the series, and it's interesting to see where our dear Ms Ives' story goes next following her untimely demise. I'm looking forward to the next volume and seeing just what our old friend Lucifer has in store.All in all, it's a fascinating look into what season 4 might have been and certainly goes to prove there were still plenty of ways to go with the characters and how the loss of Vanessa might not necessarily have meant the loss of Eva Green should the series have continued. Give it a go.
