Sixty seconds to improved bandsaw blade performance
In a YouTube episode, Jon Petersen provided a lot of good advice on how to set up and tweak a band saw. One thing he demonstrated was using this stone to "finish" the trailing edge of a bandsaw blade. Seemed like a good idea so I tried it.Yes! It did a fast job of removing any nicks or mushrooming on the back side of the blade. As the directions say, lay the wooden handle on the table of the bandsaw, on its side so the stone can engage the blade while running. Be gentle. You're not sharpening the back of the blade, just cleaning up imperfections. Took less than 60 seconds. The tool lies the same on the right side and the left side. Used on a couple blades. After dressing the blades with this stone there was noticeably less burning when making tight turns. If you're running a power tool you should be wearing eye protection anyway. I saw sparks and heard a few little pings while dressing those blades. There's definitely risk to eyes while using this but normal eye protection seems to be enough. You could accomplish similar results with stones you already have, laying them flat on the table and letting the edge of the stone kiss the bandsaw blade. That won't ruin most stones because you never used the sides for anything (until now). That said, this Olson tool probably works a bit better because the wooden handle is kind to machined surfaces, lightweight, and nimble. I can't say any of my regular stones are "nimble."I hung this tool on a hook by the bandsaw so it's handy whenever a blade needs dressing. My regular sharpening stones are simply not handy like that. The directions also suggest using this finishing tool on scroll saw blades. Haven't tried that yet but seems like a good idea.

Good choice for filing the back of the bandsaw blade
Good choice for filing the back of the bandsaw blade. Makes you wonder while the blade manufacturer doesn't do this when the make the blades?

Must have tool for bandsaw
Good tool. Smoothing the back of the saw blade and the weld area makes the blade run truer, quieter and cut more efficiently.
