The smaller, ( P-38), has been in use since WWII at least, maybe longer. Swing it open and hook the notch under the lip on the can and twist while pulling slightly towards yourself. Works great !! **Q: airplane safe?** A: I had a P-38 that I had on my keys for quite sometime, including when I traveled by air last month, and the TSA didn't have any issue. HOWEVER, courthouse security made me confiscate my P-38 just a week or so ago due to the vet tiny blade (how you could threaten someone with one is beyond me, but I wasn't about the argue given how cheap they are). So your mileage may vary. I would (and in the future WILL) be storing them in my checked bags in the future, although the tiny P-38 while folded would probably make it through in carry on luggage. Just don't be stupid about it though. They're not dangerous or a weapon, but one overzealous TSA agent could ruin your day. **Q: Will this take the lid off of an aluminum drink can easily?** A: Absolutely. I used my P-38 to remove the tops and/or bottoms of multiple aluminum drink cans. The P-51 would probably work even better due to the extra size and leverage though. **Q: Are these made of aluminum or steel?** A: they are made of steel. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ good product *by A***R on 21 November 2023* excellent ### ⭐ Total rip off *by M***. on 12 February 2022* These are not original products, and are not even the two sizes ordered ### ⭐⭐⭐ Cost does not match the item's quality nor utility. *by A***! on 21 February 2018* I didn't buy from this seller. However, I bought two genuine P51s from an military shop. This kind of manual can opener is the best you can get, beating the side and top cranking types that are more common these days. However....I only have the P51, so can only give my thoughts on that item. First the good:These open cans very well, and with practise quicker and with less effort than you can with a cranking type of can opener. The folding nature of the blade is a nice feature for use on the move, carrying in a pack or on a keyring etc., However, this is not an advantage when left in the kitchen drawer. These seem particularly good for nostalgic purposes, and they are an iconic object for military enthusiasts.Now the bad:The P51 is not a magical piece of tech, it is no better than the cheap openers of this type available in my local shop. However, the P51 is ten times as expensive as what I can find in my local shop, and that is an important factor to take into account when purchasing such a mundane and simple kitchen essential.
