The bottom part is kind of a rubbery and it has a very nice grip. **Q: I did a quick online search but couldn't find the answer, so posting it here: Does the Dr. Grip mechanical pencil have a retractable tip?** A: You can pump the top of the pencil for the lead to come forth and can do likewise to retract the lead but must do so with your hand. I don't think any mechanical pencil retracts (back) on its own. **Q: How do you change leads? The eraser doesn’t pull off the back like other mechanical pencils.** A: Yes it does. Simply pull off the silver top that covers the eraser and then pull out the eraser and you can fill the barrel with lead. **Q: Couldn't add the lead by putting the lead in the tube, what did I miss? Tried the eraser route, unscrew the middle, the bottom, no luck. Please help.** A: All you need to do is remove the cap then remove the eraser and fill the barrel with a few #5 lead (I normally fill it to capacity). Replace cap and eraser and press cap until lead appears at tip of pencil. I have the same color pencil and it works perfectly fine.
