It does not state how waterproof. I have used one all year in the Wyoming mountains in rain, snow,Ice and dust. I have not had any problems. It actually ranges through falling snow where my Sig rangefinder didn't. **Q: How far will this realistically range to? I have the vortex 1800 and I am lucky to get it to range past 500 yards.** A: It will do the 4000 yards, but you will need a tripod to stabilize it for most distances after about 1500 to 2000 yards. That might be the issue with your 1800.
