## Description

One of the best kept secrets in accurate reloading is precise bullet seating depth. Regulating seating depth and the resulting "jump" to the rifling is widely regarded as fundamental to improved accuracy. A few thousandths of an inch change between the bullet and the rifling can make the difference between average accuracy and real tack-driver performance. For all bolt-action and single-shot firearms, or any firearm with straight-line access to the chamber.

I take the average of three groups of 10 measurements to determine the OAL measurement. I use this tool in conjunction with a bore scope so as I push the bullet into the throat, I can monitor exactly when the bullet touches the lands but I have discovered that after the bullet touches the lands, it’s not possible to push it forward any further with normal hand pressure, so the bore scope is not actually beneficial. I wanted to take my shooting to the next level of accuracy so I bought the Hornady comparator tools (base, anvil & inserts) to measure from the case datum line & bullet ogive. These tools are well made, easy to use and very accurate. Precision shooting is all about eliminating variables and these tools do just that by providing a way to measure more accurately. In the past, tools of this nature were very expensive but Hornady has found a way to provide these tools at a great price so more shooters can enjoy the benefits. You need this if you want to know the length your cartridge needs to be to be right on the lands. Then you can decide with load work-ups how far to go back or even jammed into the lands. This is of course not a tool for fools who don't know what they are doing. Also, be aware that you will need to have the accessory caliper fittings for the bullet ogive measure (or the abilty to craft one on a lathe and mill like I did) if you want an accurate measurement, as this allows one to measure from a more consistent spot on the bullet and eliminates bullet tip deformation errors. This allow the measure to be set and kept secure while manipulating out of the rifle, thus giving one the confidence that it hasn't moved before a measurement is taken. The old put a slide fit bullet into a case and stick it in and close the bolt down does do the same thing, but is VERY hard to tell for sure if something didn't move.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is the thread size on the end. I want to use brass fired in my chamber to make my own modified brass**
A: The tap is UNS 5/16 - 36.  I bought the tap and tried several times.  Then I sent in two brass cases (fired in my chamber) of each caliber to Hornady and they made ones that worked.  Unless you are a skilled machinist with a lathe or tools to drill the case out perfectly straight, you are wasting your money on a tap.  I  did not have the proper tools and failed.  Hornady charges $35 a case and was quick to get them back to me.

**Q: How do you know the bullet is in the same position in the case after you pull it out that it was in while chambered?**
A: Once you are comfortable the ogive is making contact with the lands, tighten the thumbscrew on the shaft. The bullet seldom comes out with the case, so locking the shaft allows you to place the bullet back in the case to get your measurement.  I hope this helps.

**Q: will this work on a Marlin Guide Gun?**
A: You have to be able to take the bolt out and get straight access to the chamber so I don't believe it would work on lever guns. However, not sure on your model of lever, if you can get the bolt out then it would work.

**Q: Can I tap a piece of brass I have with the hornady “stuck vase removal tap”?   Will the tap allow case to attach to this tool?**
A: I don't have a Hornady stuck case removal tool so I have no idea if the diameter and pitch of the tap is compatible with the lock and load tool threads. But I wanted a couple of different caliber tapped cases for my lock and load and took those caliber brass and the tool to a local machine shop and they made perfectly compatible cases fr me cheaply.
