    So Lock And Load, Mercenaries

Man, people are still up in arms about Ronnie. It's like they can't separate this band from their original vocalist; it's understandable, but he only sang on their EP and this album. Went to the big house after that. A guy was shot. Ronnie was a suspect. You can Wiki the rest. He drove himself insane writing 'The Drug In Me Is You' at the clink. Turned out to be Ronnie's best work, though many consider this, the debut from Escape The Fate, to be the finer record. It was certainly important for the scene. I mean, come on. It made ROnnie Radke famous. It's also entirely different to the music they'd put out under Craig Mabbit's tutelage. Later on, they tried to bridge the gap between 80s hair metal and metalcore, but this album finds them flirting with emo and post-hardcore. You know, the good stuff. Not quite as refined as later albums (I'm sure this spent a lot of time in the earbuds of high school kids around 2006), you'll find it has a more passionate character, and you'll want to go back for more. A neat thing about Escape The Fate; they excel at writing refrains. There isn't a single tune here you won't fall in love with. Each one drips with sweet honey. This album is much less metal-minded, with Ronnie's witty lyrics and powerful mid-range vocals acting as exorcist.Ronnie is a talented dude, a great songwriter, a versatile vocalist (check out the range of sounds on 'Fashionably Late'), and while he got the shaft with ETE, he left behind what many consider to be the finest emo album of all time. Wouldn't say that personally, but it's definitely classic material. Most of the songs use a pop-punk structure, feature clean and harsh vocals from Radke (mostly spat against the pop shield as he narrates another homeroom tragedy), then the chorus hits out of nowhere and boom! They've got you. Won't be forgetting those lyrics any time soon. Ronnie is awesome on this album. He pretty much made the band worthwhile until Craig stepped and they made 'This War Is Ours'. Dear God, that is such a rad album.Monte Money was still around for this one, laying down punk melodies and metalcore riffs. It's not really an air-guitar album. The songs are all about loss, heartache, sorrow; things we hope you've grown out of. It's kinda sedate, which is why it's a great, crowd-pleasing album for the sesh. Everyone knows classic jams like 'Situations' and 'Not Good Enough For Truth In Cliche', but there are far better tunes on here then those. Look at 'The Webs We Weave'. A definite post-hardcore tune with some of Radke's best vocal work. There's the heartbreaking yet head-banging 'When I Go Out, I Want To Go Out On A Chariot Of Fire'. This one here, best chorus on the album. And then of course, 'The Guillotine'. On each record until 'Ungrateful', the band included a new chapter of the story, keeping the heaviness and traditional metal style of the first. Hilarious how Ronnie finished it up with 'The Guillotine IV - The Final Chapter' on 'Just Like You'. Gotta love that guy.If you're a post-hardcore nerd who likes screamo, pop-punk, and hooks so big they could hoist a Great White out of the ocean, then you already know this one inside out. For everyone else readying this, make it your next blind purchase. A legendary offering.
