The glasses start as a light shade, so don't impair vision in low light (even indoors) but are still effective in dealing with the glare of bright sunshine. Bear in mind that the darkening effect is triggered by ultra-violet light so it will not work inside a car, where the glass screens out u/v. However, the polarising is still very helpful. (My pair was helpfully supplied with a mini u/v torch to test the lenses, which showed rapid darkening.)
