The sharpness across the entire zoom range is impressive, with beautifully rendered details and minimal distortion. Whether I’m shooting portraits, wildlife, or sports, the images come out crystal clear with vibrant colors and excellent contrast. **Fast and Reliable Autofocus** The autofocus system on this lens is both fast and reliable, making it ideal for capturing moving subjects. The Eye AF feature works flawlessly, allowing me to achieve razor-sharp focus on my subjects’ eyes, which is crucial in professional photography. **Build Quality and Ergonomics** Sony's G Master series is known for its robust construction, and this lens is no exception. It feels solid in hand, yet it’s surprisingly lightweight considering its capabilities, which is a significant advantage for long shoots. The weather-sealed body provides peace of mind in various shooting conditions, allowing me to concentrate on my work without worrying about environmental factors. **Versatile Zoom Range** With a focal length of 70-200mm, this lens covers a versatile range that is perfect for different photography styles. The constant f/2.8 aperture is a game-changer, providing excellent low-light performance and beautiful background blur (bokeh), which enhances portrait shots. **Image Stabilization** The built-in OSS (Optical SteadyShot) image stabilization is another highlight, allowing me to shoot at slower shutter speeds without sacrificing sharpness. This feature is invaluable for handheld shooting, especially in dynamic environments. **Conclusion** Overall, the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens delivers exceptional performance and quality, making it an essential tool for any professional photographer using the Sony A1. It consistently exceeds my expectations across various scenarios, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking to elevate their photography to new heights.
Review: An Outstanding Improvement! - My first generation Sony 70-200 GM was my workhorse for many different kinds of photography for several years. I converted from Canon to Sony about six years ago, and used to rely similarly on the venerable Canon 70-200 L. I was delighted and impressed by the better performance of the Sony 70-200 after changing brands, and couldn't imagine things getting much better. I was accordingly reluctant when Sony announced the 70-200 GM II--I didn't think the marginal improvement possible could be worth the investment. The DXO ratings on the new 70-200 II eventually convinced me to take the plunge, and wow! I was surprised by the significant step-up in quality from the first time I used the new lens. I am mostly a sports shooter these days. I am routinely stunned by the increased resolution and focal accuracy of the new 70-200 II. The reduced weight, manual f-stop control, and additional IS controls are certainly niceties, but it's image quality and reliability that's critical to me. The new lens delivers, over and over again. I can routinely see individual eye-lashes and hairs on moving athletes captured at 200mm and 1/1000 across a gym or indoor arena, and images at ISO 4000+ have little or very manageable noise. I'm convinced the new II lens on a Sony A-1 becomes The Best Sports Camera In the World and have many images to prove it. And, of course, the combination does a great job with portraiture as well. Despite the expense, I'm very glad I stepped up from the I to the II. It is a significant and outstanding improvement.

## Features

- The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS delivers superb Image quality throughout the zoom range at all focusing distances with two aspherical elements and one XA (extreme aspherical) element to ensure high resolution throughout the image area. Two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, two Super ED glass elements and one ED aspherical element to minimize chromatic aberration while Sony’s Nano AR (anti-reflective) Coating II subdues flare and ghosting. For additional reach, high-performance 1.4x and 2x teleconverters are available (sold separately)..Angle of View (APS-C) : 23ﾟ- 8ﾟ6, Maximum Magnification ratio (x) : 0.3
- Four of Sony’s original XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors deliver high thrust efficiency that boosts AF speed by up to 4x compared to the previous model for fast, precise continuous autofocus and tracking for stills and movies. AF tracking while zooming is improved by approx. 30% which greatly increase chances of getting the shot even with subjects moving rapidly towards the lens.
- Designed with movie magic in mind and the latest lens technology to reduce focus breathing, focus shift when zooming and axis shift when zooming. The XD Linear Motors and a new aperture drive unit contribute to quiet operation and independent control rings for focus, zoom and iris, with a click on/off switch for the aperture ring, make this lens ideal for movie shooting. Sony’s Linear Response MF feature ensures responsive and repeatable direct manual focus control.
- This lens offers outstanding optical quality and autofocus in the world’s lightest* 70-200mm F2.8 zoom lens. XD Linear Motors and magnesium alloy barrel components result in an overall weight of just 2.3 lb. (1045 grams); approx. 29% lighter than the previous model. Advanced design improves balance, while a constant barrel length further contributes to easy, agile handling.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Would this lens work well for portraits? or is this more inclined for landscape? I am debating between this lens or the new 24-105mm G.**
A: This f2.8 is excellent for real estate, gimbal and group horizon shots. This is a great choice as a second lens to carry. However start with a lens like the 24-105 for portrait and subjects you need to reach from 15 yards.

**Q: As a landscape photographer who usually shoots in f/11-f/22, is this sony 24-70 f2.8 lens really much better than the zeiss 24-70 f4 ?**
A: no. at those apertures the difference will be minimal. if you pixel peep you may notice better detail and less distortion in the corners, but that's about it, but not enough to make or break the photo. or justify the price. the G master is also MASSIVE. mounting it on an A7R II will make your set up just as big and heavy as a Canon 5DM4 + 24-70 f/2.8 IIthe only reason i would carry a G Master is if would shoot at 2.8

**Q: Will it work with A6000?**
A: While it is true this is a full frame lens that in no way means it would not be a great lens on the a6000. The most important feature of this lens is the 2.8 aperture and that does not change on a crop sensor camera like yours! The larger aperture will still would allow it to focus faster and perform better in low light situations as well as allow for better bokah. Glass is more important than the body. The a6000 has a great sensor and image quality to start with and the lens would be awesome on it. The only "issue" is its not as wide as it would be on an A7 so think of its field of view as being a 36-105 instead of a 24-70. Not quite as good for landscape. Good glass will stay with your as you upgrade your bodies so the investment is totally worth it as long as you stay within the E-Mount system

**Q: Is there a fish eye effect around the edges at 16mm? I am also looking at Zeiss Batis 18mm which is wide and has little fish eye effect.**
A: At 16mm there is no fisheye, I sometimes shoot group photos at 16mm. But at 35mm it’s a wide angle shot which has the fish eye look. This lens is an amazing lens with lots of versatility.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Incredible lens, fast, sharp, and lightweight
*by I***N on June 4, 2025*

A gorgeous lens. Very lightweight (for what it does - this is a professional bright aperture zoom). Autofocus is very fast and precise with my Sony a1. Image quality is wonderful. The inner-zoom design is a game-changer - one to go to inner-zoom you never want to go back.
