House of Flame and Shadow: The INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER and the smouldering third book in the Crescent City series, from the creator of ACOTAR : Maas, Sarah J.: desertcart.co.uk: Books

Review: HOFAS 5/5 🔥 - I loved this. I’m obsessed. This series is amazing! “The friends they'd made were what mattered in the end. Not the enemies. Through love, all is possible.” It baffles me how SJM manages to mesh worlds within the MAAS Universe SOOOO perfectly and give us the most interesting tome -the size of this book alone is scary as hell but let me tell you, from page 1, I was hooked! I really enjoyed the change of worlds and POV’s from chapter to chapter. I feel like the story benefited so much from that because the timeline was set at a much faster pace (compared to the other previous books) and I wasn’t getting bored. The characters I know and love from HOEAB / HOSAB couldn’t have a better triumphant arc, and it honestly made me more invested in a particular character from ACOTAR. Bryce & Hunt’s character development is phenomenal! I love that we get to see the more “real” side of their relationship where they don’t just agree on everything. Although they feel a little more separated from the group as a whole in this book, I think it’s because their “love story” has been told in book 1 & 2- it’s kind of SJM’s way of weening us off. I love that we got to know more of Ruhn through his vulnerability, but… The star of this book (imo) is Lidia Cervos, who just broke my heart time and time again. “This is Daybright. Blast it to Hel, Irithys." Her character development + plot line are some of (if not) the BEST I’ve ever read. The complete 180 from a villain arc to carrying the whole book on her back is just incredible. I can’t wait for more… I can’t believe there’s not even a pub date or an announcement yet…I need another book in this series like I need air!
Review: An Unforgettable Journey in the Crescent City Saga! - House of Flame and Shadow is an absolute triumph and a thrilling addition to Sarah J. Maas’s Crescent City series. This third installment raises the stakes with a smoldering blend of heart-pounding action, jaw-dropping twists, and steamy romance. Fans of Maas’s signature style will be completely hooked from the first page to the explosive finale. The character development is phenomenal, with Bryce, Hunt, and the rest of the cast facing challenges that push them to their limits. The intricate world-building continues to amaze, weaving together threads from the previous books while introducing new layers of intrigue and magic. Maas’s ability to blend epic fantasy with deeply personal stakes is unparalleled. The pacing is masterful, keeping you on edge while delivering moments of humor, heartbreak, and pure adrenaline. It’s a rollercoaster ride that will leave readers desperate for the next installment. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Maas or new to her work, House of Flame and Shadow is a must-read. It’s everything you could hope for in a fantasy series—passion, danger, and a world so vivid you’ll never want to leave.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The world is clever, this book was disappointing
*by E***E on 12 February 2024*

SPOILER WARNING Wow, I have really been putting off writing this review, I don’t even know why really but I think I am still in denial that it felt disappointing after so much anticipation. I am going to start with what I liked about this book and go from there: (Spoilers, if you haven't finished!! Don’t read!!) Things that I liked: The Azreil, Nesta, Bryce scenes at the start- they worked so well for me, I liked the dynamics, I liked that they didn’t go on beyond the start and that the book didn’t become ACOTAR. The scenes were engaging and interesting and I just liked that it was Nesta who went into the cave. Lidia and Ruhn- Yes, yes, yes and yes! They are my favourite couple of this series, I absolutely loved both of them in this, particularly Lidia. Their dynamic worked so well and she is just a complete hero. The Fire Sprites- will always and forever have a special place in my heart, the fact Lidia has a connection to them just strengthens this even further for me. I loved that Nesta connected with Bryce's mum, I am sure there must be more to this but for now I am just here for Nesta's mummy issues being scratched. I did enjoy the little nods to TOG and am intrigued to see where this goes next. I liked that Ithan became the Alpha- despite his chapters being boring throughout, that whole storyline made me happy. Things that just did not work for me: When did Bryce get so annoying? I remember absolutely loving her in the first book of this series but in this book she was so dismissive of what Hunt was going through? Her 'aha here is my secret plan' narrative just didn’t work for me and I found it a bit annoying. So much info dumping!!! The pacing worked well for the very start and the very end but in the middle it just felt chaotic, the story was moving along so quickly it was difficult to connect with the characters in the same way, from a long book I want some time to be with the characters, to connect and understand them more but this one just felt as though it was either super fast action or intense info dumping with no real in between. I hated the repetitive comments about Bryce having something up her sleeve? Why? Bryce being able to so easily open a portal, going to borrow the mask and Nesta just giving it to her? Nope, way to convenient. Why did they have to go through all of this to find out about the origin of the Asteri when Hel knew all along? Silly. The ending- stakes are not high when everything is so fairytale perfect, the ending just did not work for me at all in this one, everything that transpired happened without a hitch, was all just way to convenient and had me rolling my eyes. As if the asteri would be that easy to get rid of!! Overall this book was okay but just not IT. I was soo excited for this one and it just felt so flat, I think a lot of people who are disappointed are disappointed there wasn’t more ACOTAR but that wasn’t it for me, CC is my favourite Sarah J Maas series and it was the CC elements that left me feeling unsatisfied.
