This HOG.5 scrubber (tm) has 12 square inches (75 square cm) of algal growth surface, which is designed to absorb the nutrients from this much feeding per day: 0.5 Frozen cubes, or 5 Pinches of flake, or 5 Square inches (31 square cm) of nori, or 1.4 grams of pellets The number of gallons or liters of water in your tank or sump does not matter. If you feed more than the above amounts, you can get multiple HOG.5 units; multiple units are preferred over one larger unit because you can clean one unit per week, and because you'll always have one unit filtering while the other one starts growing again after a cleaning. Multiple units are also good for backup. The magnets attach the outside cover to the inside cover, through the aquarium wall, and can be used on glass or acrylic up to 1/4 inch (6.25 mm) thick. Not more. If your aquarium wall is 3/8" (9mm) or bigger, then put the filter on your sump wall instead; it will work the same. No electrical parts go inside the aquarium; only air. And the air bubbler is already supplied, so you don't have to get an airstone. The bubbler is simply vinyl air hose that has been cut lengthwise, and with cross-cuts, to form little flexible segments that are both adjustable and open-able to allow for easy cleaning. This HOG.5 will run on both 120V and 240V, and comes with a 10 ft (300 cm) power cord with a U.S. plug. If you require a different plug you can get an adapter at any local hardware or travel store, or online, or you can cut off the U.S. plug and install your own plug from a hardware store. You will need to get a timer so you can run the LED for up to 22 hours per day (not 24). Requires an air pump that can pump up to 1.0 liters per minute (.04 cfm), which low-cost air pumps can usually handle. Took a little over 2 weeks to start buildings algae but it has lowered my nitrates to zero. I would highly recommend getting a bubble pump to push bubbles through it. Doesn’t have to be an expensive one. My tank is the best it's ever been. Algea is disappearing in the display tank. Corals are looking great. The alga growth in the scrubber really took off this week. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not sure it works *by S***D on Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2016* Update 2: My 5 gallon Nano with 2 small fish is doing great after a month with the scrubber. Make sure to give it some time to work. The only downside I see now is the noise it makes. I never thought I could run a nano and keep the nitrates and phosphates so low without running GFO or a refugium.Update: After a month I have some algae growing in the skimmer. I have seen little to no effect on Nitrates, but Phosphates are very low.I don't think this is working as intended. It grows Algae on the tank glass inside the scrubber but very little on the actual grow mat. I'm using a whisper 20 air pump and I tried light periods of 12 - 20 hours.
