That was not the case with these, they were great and effective at taking away my pain and I did not have pain before I was due for the next dose, they were effective for as long as I needed. When I am sick I struggle to get the sleep that I need. They do the job just as well as the leading brand but for less money. I have hip pain due to old age and so I take 2 at night before bed and any other pains I might have from minor injuries (gardening, playing ball with my dog) are covered too. I can sleep well. I forgot to take it a couple of times and I definitely noticed I hurt, did not sleep as well as I could not get comfortable. It really handles aches and pains beautifully. I calender it now so I don't forget to take it.
