They were easy to install directly to the existing rigid rail around the stern end of the cockpit. Seem to be high quality stainless steel, they are the shiniest thing on my 40 year old boat. They can be adjusted to different angles which is nice, but you do have to loosen the two allen bolts a lot to make the adjustment. Not a big deal if you don't plan on adjusting the angles often, but I've used the rod holders with quick adjust arms on fishing boats which is what I'd buy if I owned a fishing boat. You also have to make sure the bolts are torqued down REALLY TIGHT our else they WILL move with minimal drag in the line. I installed mine with the little allen tool that's included and after trolling a big "broke back" diving lure for ten minutes I snagged some free floating sea grass. This caused the holder to pivot fast enough that I had to quickly grab the pole. I almost dumped $300 worth gear to the bottom of the bay!
