These are fairly sturdy, so if you plan to use them for books they should hold a lot. However, if you plan to use them for books or other items that will be taken off and replaced frequently you may be disappointed. The laminate/veneer seems to be paper, and while it's glued securely on the top and bottoms of each shelf, the side seems to be loose and I'm concerned that it will start to peel. I plan to keep them and possibly replace the shelves with real wood when that happens (these are for frequently used school books). I purchased these for one hundred and twenty and would have expected better quality shelves for that price, but don't want to hassle with the return at this point. Easy to put together. Looks nice for the most part. The wood veneer has a wood like texture which is a nice touch. Seems sturdy and balanced. My only complaints are that the wood veneer is loose in some places on the shelves (mostly bubbles along the edge) and the inside edges of the rack itself (the black supports) are kind of sharp. I have my laptop based on the second shelf and my hardback books on the two lower selves.
