You can find instructions on how to activate it on traffic their website. It's extremely easy to activate it, all you need is molasses and some time. I originally bought this for my plants, which it was worked wonderfully for. Plants are perkier, and I can use less fertilizer. After reading more about EM I decided to try it out in a few more areas. My chicken coop was starting to smell a little off, so I decided to put some of the em1 in a pump sprayer and spray the bedding area with it. After about two weeks the smell is noticably improving. My bathtub drain started turning a smell, and I tried using boiling water, being stuffs and vinegar but the smell came right back the next day. I poured a few caps full in the drain and let it sit overnight and the smell was gone after a few days.
