As of 2017, the USPSTF reaffirmed its recommendation from 2009 that pregnant women or women planning a pregnancy need to take 400 mcg - 800 mcg of folic acid a day to prevent neural tube defects (a birth defect) in their offspring. This actually means that any prenatal vitamin without at least 800 mcg of folate is insufficient by industry standards. You will also notice that most of the good quality reputable brands have at least 800 mcg of folate. We include a little bit more because as many as 70% of women have a genetic polymorphism (a fancy way of saying a genetic mutation) in the MTHFR gene. This gene dictates how someone metabolizes folic acid into folate and when this genetic variant is present, the folate needs for that person increases. Women with MTHFR typically do not have specific symptoms and since not every doctor tests for this, it often goes undiagnosed but the chances of neural tube defects and other pregnancy side effects like miscarriage can increase! This is also the reason why we only use L-mehtyl folate (the most natural, methylated folate) in the form of Quatrefolic so that it is not only easier for the body to absorb and works for anyone, including those with MTHFR (where synthetic folic acid would be very contraindicated).
