The heated mist picks up and carries the vapor. You can use it with off-brand humidifiers and vaporizers, but the Vicks Vaporizer has a tiny well under the mist output vent for you to pour the vaporizer in to. **Q: Can this be put right into the water on the warm mist Vicks steamer or does it have to go in the little compartment on top of unit?** A: It actually states “When adding to your warm mist humidifier place VapoSteam into the medicine cup, not the tank.” I finally figured out that this is why mine was noisy and spitting water during operation. After switching to only putting water and a pinch of salt in the tank, it works perfectly. **Q: Does this leave a residue in the steamer cup?** A: Yes, this will leave residue in the medicine cup and will need to be cleaned out.
