She was describing the characteristics of it and how its made. I'm glad I did. I was better prepared for the scent of it. Had I not known I may have been put off by it. It's not offensive at all. But because it's a nut and the nut is roasted, this is where the "black" color comes from. As a result it has somewhat of a smoky scent to it! If you're looking for something sensual or perfume-y, this isn't it. But the scent does fade after you put it on. BODY: Now, I purchased this with the intent of using it as an all over body moisturizer, head to toe! This says "butter" on the jar, but it's more like cold petroleum jelly and isn't easy to spread. If you plan to use this all over, you will have to mix it with another moisturizer that has more viscosity to make is spreadable. I have hand excema so my skin tends to have dark dry patches and I'm SUPER sensitive to a lot of things. I can't use just anything. This castor oil "butter" has been really helpful in giving my hands a deep moisture and it feels very relieving. Ive also been using it on my lips, even before bed. Now most things with this thickness would make me greasy and I would break out. Nope! This butter absorbs very well into the skin and doesn't leave a greasy feeling. HAIR: I've used it on my hair. I have really curly hair and it drinks anything I put in it. So after day 4 or 5 of washing my hair, my hair gets really dry and feels brittle to the touch. Well, I'm coming up on a week and my hair is still moisturized and it's really soft! It does leave somewhat of a coating on your hair, not greasy. I suspect that this is part of the benefit of the castor oil. Castor oil performs like petroleum jelly but without clogging yours pores. It coats, but without the clog. I'm looking forward to seeing the changes in my hair and skin with this product. I would buy this again! I bought this for my hair and it does wonders. I also use this on other areas of my skin like my elbows and knees, sometimes legs for dry skin but for the face you make have to do some more research. Sorry I couldnt answer fully but still hopes this helps. **Q: Is this supposed to just be the pure castor oil version? Why does it say coconut on the jar? Also, is it soft when you scoop it out or is it hard?** A: I have ordered all three varieties, original, lavender and coconut out of curiosity and reading some reviews concerned about the butter being too hard. The original and lavender are much softer but the coconut is harder, more solid and as I suspected it’s because it contains actual coconut oil which tends to solidify (look at any coconut oil sold in stores and you can see) The only exceptions when coconut is not as solid are if it’s stored above a certain temperature or if it’s fractionated coconut oil which means it’s still good just a bit more processed and part that makes it solid is separated. I’ve personally used it with great results. Perhaps if the company would use this type of coconut oil in their JBCO butter the consistency would be more like the other two varieties without compromising quality. Just saying.
