I saw where someone made a big effort to paint them to look realistic but that's completely unnecessary. Yes they look very very fake when they come - but give them a few weeks in the pond and they'll starting getting covered with outdoor elements like muck and algae and will start looking much more realistic. I've had mine a few months now and they look pretty real to me. I did, however, have to sew them together with fishing line to keep them from going straight into the filter and jamming it up. I used fishing line to tether them to a large rock at the bottom of the pond. Works great.
