This unusual plant belongs to the large family of Aizoaceae. These are also known as "mimicry" plants, as they are particularly good at camouflaging and blending into their environment. "Baby Toes" gets into name from its finger-like leaves in upright clusters. Each "finger" of the plant features a translucent window. Sunlight filters through the window to enable photosynthesis. In desert environments, oftentimes only the window is visible above the sand. At home, plant "Baby Toes" in soil with less organic material and more gritty fill such as gravel, pumice, or perlite. This will help provide essential drainage. "Baby Toes" also needs bright light and well-drained soil. It is somewhat frost tolerant, but will need to be protected to prevent scarring. Watch "Baby Toes" in the late summer through fall, when it will bloom with bright, 2-inch yellow flowers. Sadly I had to do some much needed TLC surgery on him and got rid of the flower and broken leaves. I’m pretty bummed out because the pictures they advertised look so healthy and nice. I hope with my care, my baby toes can slowly recover and bloom. We tried putting it back into the pot with the soil that came with it and watered well, then let it dry out. 1/2 the plant was dead. I thought I would try to pot it and improve it but now the plant is almost completely dead. I potted it in cactus and succulent soil and watered it.
