The 026 was made in the early to mid 1990's and the 026 PRO came in a few years later when the decompression valve became popular. (A decompression valve ( valve) on a STIHL chainsaw is designed to make starting the engine easier by reducing the compression pressure in the cylinder. This is particularly useful for larger engines where the compression pressure can be high, requiring more effort to pull the starter cord. The STIHL decompression valve releases gas to reduce peak compression pressure, making the starting process less strenuous. The PRO version also has a slightly bigger engine but the case is virtually identical. Most of the time a PRO will cost you about $50 more. I have a pair and one backs up the other. Both run like bandits and are my favorite firewood saws. I paid less for both of them added together than one new MS261.
