The protection is excellent. I landed on my hip in a motorcycle in a low speed slide and didnt even get bruised. However, they are NOT waterproof. They are fine if you encounter briefs periods of showers, but not in full on rain for over 10 minutes. Also, one of the belt loops ripped through when I bent over.
