I put it up diagonally which may not be as aesthetically pleasing to some but was glad the option worked easily with the backboard ( The diagonal set-up seems to catch more errant throws). As far as the size goes, it works well for myself and guests, but I will not be surprised if I end up with a few holes in the wall at some point. When darts hit the backboard, they will occasionally stick but often fall to the floor which is fine for the carpet in that room.
