### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great mentor and national hero
*by V***L on 2 May 2025*

Always kept blooming light for his mates and kept himself ahead for facing situations. Powerhouse to motivate others as well for doing national duties. It can be good read to those who want to know mental strength of Bhagat singh on the path of sacrifice or duties toward nation.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the must read books
*by P***H on 9 October 2020*

Remember Mr. McKinley’s voice-over in the climax scene of the movie ‘Rang De Basanti’?“I always believed there were two kinds of men in this world, men who go to their deaths screaming, and men who go to their deaths in silence. Then I met a third kind.”I honestly felt a similar emotional surge when I closed this book. Sardar Bhagat Singh, the saga which has been unceremoniously cast aside from our standard history texts and remains confided to short stories, has been brought to light by Kuldip Nayar in this book. This book sets him apart from reckless gun-waiving ideology and establishes him as a voracious reader, who reflected on the ideas of Marx, Lenin, Aristotle, Russell. On one hand, he could yield bombs and pistols, on the other, he could go on a 116-day hunger strike to achieve unprejudiced behavior for Indian prisoners. The author profoundly differentiates Bhagat Singh from other revolutionaries, as a matured thinker, through his jail writings - Cult of Bomb, Why I am an Atheist, To young Political workers, and excerpts from letters. No wonder during the course of the Lahore Conspiracy Trial his popularity was no less than Gandhiji himself. The Indian masses found it hard to connect with his utopian methods of non-violence. The book keeps a keen eye on the then political context in India.Himself being an eminent journalist, the author has put in a great effort in his research to collect all the facts and accounts. Depictions of Saunders' assassination, daredevil escape from Lahore, Hans Raj Vohra's answer to why he turned a government approver, and other details will be a definite treat for any history buff. In a simple and lucid way, the author has documented how in a short span of only 23 years Bhagat Singh tasted various shades of life - friendship, sacrifice, betrayal.Personally I believe this book is a must-read for every Indian. This book is all about a man whose life teaches us a sense of nationalism which is free from any hypocrisy and other agendas like religion or hooliganism. Unfortunately, his words still remain contemporary even after decades of freedom. He writes to his mother Vidyavati Kaur - "Ma, I have no doubt that my country will be one day free. But I am afraid that the brown sahibs are going to sit in the chairs the white sahibs will vacate."
