THE GREAT HEDGE OF INDIA

The great hedge quest
As a former officer of the Indian customs, I found this book fascinating. Also amazing was the author's persistence in his search for the elusive hedge. The narrative is beguiling: one finds oneself cheering him along, & rejoicing at the eventual success.

As rgards the manner of description,it is vibrant.
Not amusing as his other book on Tea.It is more a personal memoir than a universal talk .It doesnot attract a reader's mind.

Quest to explore the history...
It's a pity that I never knew about this book when I stayed in London. I surely missed my opportunity to meet Mr. Moxham. Such enthusiasm to explore the history with very less hope to start with. Amazing information through his quest.

Excellent account of British rule, economy and a travel adventure
Anyone, teenagers and above will enjoy this book. Roy Moxham has very good appreciation of style and does an excellent job of presenting contrasts. This book will make for a very good reference for students of British rule in India or for students of economics. There is a very detailed description of the importance of salt in human nutrition. The author has done a tremendous amount of research in his pursuit of discovering the great thorny hedge. The reader will learn a lot of history about the British Raj, not found in Indian school history texts. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Great book, ruined by some knock-off copy
I have read this book while living abroad. So, I wanted to add it to my personal collection. The copy that was sent by seller "bookswagon" Is essentially a knock-off/ bootleg copy with a hologram sticker activated? Every page of the book has a small blank square. Book is essentially unreadable.

Boring...
Boring and poorly written presentation of a genuinely fascinating piece of history. Random chapters flit about between the theme of salt taxation in India and beyond, and the authors terrible luck at finding absolutely any evidence at all. Despite this I persevered with it, as did the author, and finally found solace in the last chapter, spoiler alert... (i wouldn't do that, but you get the idea). Generally worth reading for the first and last chapters. I did read the middle bit too but was annoyed at myself for wasting my time and effort, it’s a padded out dribble of inane bumbling-ness-ness, ill never get that time back...

Four Stars
Not an academic work, but extremely interesting, and packed with information and delightful anecdotal detail.

fascinating book
good book for an old Dad (93) who spent the second ww in India. It is a true story that gives amazing insight into the bizzare workings of the British Raj. Promptly sent but not in quite such good condition as we hoped (nasty stain along bottom edges.

fascinating
Read this a few years ago, very atmospheric and filled with (interesting and unsettling) history and wanderlust. Bought it as a gift recently and was a hit. A travel/history gem.
