These are not shoes, they are a very flimsy cover for the top of your shoes with two elastic straps to go under your shoes. Unfortunately, this means that you are flopping the toes as there is no bottom to support them. And they don't look like feet or shoes as they don't stay in shape. So, if you looking for a shoe-shaped product, this is not it. But I used lightweight cardboard, similar to the bottom panel from a facial tissue box. I inserted the cardboard between my shoe and the elastic bands, with staples holding it from slipping from the bands as I walked.The cardboard was wide enough to hold the sides of the shoe cover far enough apart to make the cover look similar to the photo. Then I practiced walking - very carefully! I don't plan on walking much at the costume party, so this fix should hold up okay. I gave only 4 stars because the shoe covers needed help to look like cartoon feet, and the cardboard wouldn't hold up to much walking. But, golly, I love them with my costume.
