but they work great for it

Most people are looking for gators to keep snow/water out. I was looking for a pair that would keep out the foxtails when I go hiking through the grass. They tend to get stuck in my socks mostly, however they can also get stuck in my hiking boots. After spending about a half hour pulling them out of my socks and hiking boots after my last hike, I went on Amazon to see if I could find some lightweight gators. Most are made to be waterproof for skiing, however most of my hikes are in the summer often times through grass. I was looking for a more breathable (non-coated) nylon that would repel the foxtails, and not be too hot for hiking. I was quite interested in these, when I saw them. Though they are water repellent (therefore, probably hotter), I was interested in the fact that they were the only pair that I had seen that were below the calf, rather than above it (and therefore, potentially cooler). After receiving them, I used them on my next hike. I was very pleasantly surprised at how well they repelled the foxtails. Only a couple were around at the end of the hike, and they fell away as soon as I opened the Velcro to take them off. And they weren't nearly as hot as a full gator would have been. It's an unconventional use for them, but they work great for it. (And saved me about a half hour post hike.)

OK for a weekend - avoid for anything serious

These are light and reasonably cheap, but you get what you pay for.On the plus side, they're incredibly light. That's about all.Soooo many negatives. First, as other reviewers have mentioned, the choice of fabrics is just kind of weird. They aren't rain proof, but they aren't breathable either. I can see going one way or the other, but it seems like this design is set up to funnel rain into my shoe while simultaneously trapping sweat. There are a couple of other head-scratcher design choices too, from the upside-down placement of the lace hook, the lack of a snap/fastener at the top or bottom of the velcro closure, and the gigantic cordlock on the side of the gaiter that makes it hard to tuck the excess cord under the gaiter. Some of that plays into the durability of the product too. I was able to get about 100 miles out of them before I had to replace the cord and 200 miles out of these before the uppers separated from the velcro closure.Bottom line is that these would be decent for a 2-3 times/year hiker looking to keep trail debris out of their shoes, but not very good for anyone else.

What can I say they are great.

I bought these to keep dirt, pine needles and gravel out of my low cut hiking boots. I already have a pair of over the calf gaiters. I used these hiking on a muddy and snowy trail. I did not use the front shoe lace clip or the under arch strap. these were not necessary. Nice to have it I were in deep snow I guess or fording a creek, but this is not why I have them. What can I say they are great. No issues at all. Easy on easy off. pack up nice a small in the tiny pouch. Any one complaining probably should have got the over calf gaiters or is expecting way to much. These are really summer gaiters for keep crud out of your shoes. i could have tied bandannas around my ankles to do the same thing, but why when there are these? My legs and feet did not get hot like with over calf gaiters. Just buy them.
