When they came to my house, I took off their shoes and put on slipper socks. They kept their feet warm in winter, and stayed ON their feet. I had them growing up (we called them muk-luks) and my feet were cozy all winter long in the house. A side story: When I was in first grade, I had an ingrown toenail which was surgically removed by the family doctor, and my mom sent me to school in one regular shoe and I had to wear the muk-luk on the foot with the boo-boo. Of course it was picture day and for pics in those days (think early 60's) we assembled on bleachers and got a group class photo. Of COURSE I was placed in the front row with my mismatching footwear. So I was goofy for posterity.
