A varistor resists all electrical flow below a specific threshold usually measured in voltage. Above that threshold (120 volts for this device) electricity starts to flow through the varistor increasing exponentially as the voltage goes up. This effectively short circuits electricity coming from any surge (usually this is from devices inside the house like washing machines ) from the hot to the neutral. Since electricity takes the path of least resistance that surge will dump back out onto the grid (unless there has been some catastrophe inside the home or something is wired wrong). Does this need to be replaced? It is approximately 12 years old.** A: If one or two LEDs are out that indicates the breaker is no longer working and the circuits they supply must not be hot (useable). Check the two breakers with a voltage tester to be sure. Being in service for 12 years circuits may have seen the voltage spike and tripped the breaker. If they had been installed properly these two circuits would have fed voltage/current to circuits that were in use. **Q: Does this offer the same level of protection as the SF100? One review said that the SF100 protected the "sensitive electronics" better.** A: The Seimens protects nothing. I know personally. I had a lightning strike and lost $20,000.00 worth of Electronic equipment TV's, computers, printers and a multitude of other appliances. the Siemens unit was still glowing green as nothing had happened. When I contacted Siemens about their warranty I was informed it would only cover the wiring in the walls if it was damaged and nothing that was plugged into the outlets. Don't waste your money, they don't work at all and their warranty is very misleading. **Q: Will this fit an ITE panel?** A: Perfect fit in ITE EQ panel. **Q: Can a load be connected to this protection device, such as a clothes dryer or does this need nothing attached?** A: Yes a load can be connected to the unit and it is designed for that. My understanding is not a double hot leg (220-240 volts) only 2 separate single leg loads (120 volts). There are 20 amp and 15 amp versions available as I recall. This is the most thorough and economical way to protect my house from surges. Beware, only works in Siemens or compatible boxes. Does not work in Square D panels. Cannot even be adapted. This only takes about 15 min or less to install. No harder than a normal circuit breaker. Designed to protect both and left legs of your 240vac service. Only need one and replaces existing breakers. Be sure you get one sized for the spot you have picked out in your box. You have to have two full size breakers of the same value 2x15amp or 2x20amp. Order the right size. Too much electronics in appliances to not protect all of them in one shot. I highly recommend every house have one.
