I used the washers and nuts provided in the hardware package. I didn't upgrade to M12 or 1/2" bolts because I thought that would have been total overkill as the hitch is rated for 500 pounds and 8 M10 bolts are more than adequate to hold 500 pounds, plus it's a tight fit, having that bit of extra wiggle room was very important and made for an installation without brain damage. There is a piece of plastic trim in the location of the hitch (see pic) and at first I thought I'd have to remove it but it has some flex so I was able to get the hitch in. I got one bolt in on one side then put another, without the washers, on the other side so I could snug the hitch into position. I also had to use a piece of wood to leverage the hitch up (due to the plastic trim piece) and was just able to get enough of the bolt in to get one of the nuts on it. After snugging it into place, I then added another bolt with the washers and snugged that in....then I removed the washerless bolt and installed all the other bolts, washers and nuts. Then I alternated side to side tightening as directed. Came out great. Given other reviews concerning the inadequacy of the bolts, I purchased 12mm x 50mm flanged bolts from Amazon (Class 10.9 Steel Cap Screw, Phosphate & Oil Finish, Flange Hex Head, External Hex Drive, Meets DIN 6921, Flanged, Non-Serrated, 50mm Length, Fully Threaded, M12-1.75 Metric Coarse Threads, Imported (Pack of 10), part number B006HYFUNA) and re-used the nuts from the original, shorter bolts which held the two front hooks in place. Three thoughts on the bolts: first, they are a much more substantial than the bolts that come with the Reese 65063; second, they are the same color, diameter and "look" as the originals; and third, they are not fully threaded, but they don't need to be (the description is wrong, the CAD diagram of the item is correct). The original locking nuts fit the new bolts perfectly. The Reese 65063 fits the available space perfectly, but as other have noted in their review, the holes seem to be slightly misaligned (perhaps the misalignment explains the smaller bolts provided with the hitch). I had to ream out one hole about 1/8". After the reaming, the bolts all went in perfectly. I installed the inside top nut by taping it to an 18mm wrench (as suggested by others) but I was able to attach the other six nuts by hand. The receiver has about an 1/8" clearance, top and bottom, from the bumper. To avoid scratches, I not only taped the opening but laid an old sheet along the bottom of the opening.
