They do seem pretty sturdy. For an older teen-size kid to tool around the back yard, not so much. It is awkward when your feet won't fit inside the ridges--I think shoes would probably fit inside the ridges up to about a youth size 3 (ladies size 5?). For a women's size 7 boot, they partially ride up onto the shoe-holding ridges and are awkward. However, we'd probably be able to use them if they had some sort of pattern imprinted on the bottom. The bottoms are so smooth that they are EXTREMELY slippery. When I was testing them out I leaned down to tighten the straps and they went right out from under me. Some sort of ridges or skin on the bottom would make a big difference. They practiced on a relatively flat surface and were able to get the basics of balance and simple technique. They had a lot of fun with them and were able to balance and slide within 10 minutes of use. This seems like a great product for teaching young kids.
