SANDOZ WROTE THE STORY WITH SUCH REALISM THAT YOU ACTUALLY FEEL YOU ARE THERE AND SEEING AND HEARING THE FACTS FIRST HAND. IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I HAVE NOT WANTED A BOOK TO END. This is partly explained by the very lengthy “introduction” by Vine Deloria Jr., which is well worth the read. Beyond that, it is a most splendid and informative relation of the peoples of the western Plains during the swan song of the Plains Indian culture. It also humanizes the enigmatic Oglala leader, Crazy Horse, without making him one of The Power Rangers”. The reader who reads closely will see the fullness and value, of the Plains culture. The reader who readers closer will see that the humanity of Whites and Reds was not so different as was believed. And the reader who reads even closer still will see the chimera of the heartbreak of Whites today as we are inexorably losing our culture and losing this land in almost precisely the same ways we acquired it.
