There are a few reasons for that. First, Dostoyevsky’s writing style is almost poetic,elegant and emotionally rich. Second, the story is presented through two points of view: the writer and the protagonist, who seem to converse with each other. The narrator is a lonely and delusional man who avoids connecting with real people, believing that attachment always leads to pain. He lives alone in a small room, content with his solitude until one night, he sees a girl crying. He instantly falls in love with her. They agree to meet each night, and over time, he opens up about his loneliness and tells her that he has been waiting for someone like her. Nastenka, the girl,shares her own story of one-sided love. She left her home in search of someone she once loved unsure if he would ever return to her. The narrator even helps her write and send letters to find that lost love. What happens next is touching and unexpected. This is a very short book less than 100 pages but it definitely leaves a mark on your heart. And yes, I am more than ready to read more of Dostoyevsky’s works.
