This battle is usually given a page or two tacked on to an analysis of the battle of the Crater. Well worth the read. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Serviceable *by W***L on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 7, 2018* This is a serviceable account of the fighting on the north side of the James in Grant’s third offensive at Petersburg. It covers who was involved and what happened in the several engagements that made up First Deep Bottom.A serious limitation however is that the context of this operation is mostly ignored. Instead of developing it, the easy way out is taken to account for the indecisiveness of First Deep Bottom by attributing it basically to W.S. Hancock’s supposed timidity and lack of aggressiveness. While this falls conveniently into line with the Civil War narrative as it has come down to us from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is inadequate today. The originally stated purpose of the operation was to enable a cavalry raid on the railroads north of Richmond. The recent Wilson-Kautz raid nearly came to a calamitous end when Confederate infantry and cavalry intercepted the raiders upon their return to Petersburg. Hence, it is easy to understand why Grant would want Confederate forces contained and a return path secured before launching another, similar raid. While Hancock undoubtedly took a conservative approach, he did so for a reason, as it is clear from the dispatches included in the text he did not know the strength and disposition of the Confederates he faced. If he couldn’t be sure that he could contain them, the basis for the raid was not satisfied. The sharp repulse of Richard Anderson’s attack at the Darby property is an example of what could happen at this point in the war to an attack made without adequate preparation.The maps are useful but incomplete. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Recommended for those interested in this part of the war *by M***Y on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 12, 2016* James Price delves into the battle of First Deep Bottom, a small (by comparison) fight during the final months of the Civil War. There is little to date to chronicle this action between a mixture of Confederates from various divisions and corps, and Hancock's II Corps and Sheridan's cavalry. There are ample illustrations, several maps, notes, and index.
