Review: Makes AEP245 access points work better - In short, I had a lot of problems with my TP-Link AEP245 access points before getting this, and now I don't. This is a better alternative to a mesh system if you have ethernet in a few spots in the house. I have a large house and a large number of smart devices. I was having a hard time getting good wireless signal in remote corners of the house and my router kept failing because of too many wifi clients. I thought about getting a mesh system, but since I have ethernet in several spots across my house, I would have used the ethernet backhaul anyway. No need to use a mesh system, which is designed to send info wirelessly from device to device at a slower speed. Instead I decided to do what is done in commercial contexts: just use several access points. I purchased three TP-link AEP 245 access points and set them up in a way that gets coverage all over the house. It worked OK, except I kept having problems with devices that roam, like cell phones. They wouldn't let go of one and go to the other. Or something. They always said they were connected but some of the time no internet would get through. The AEP245 is supposed to work in standalone mode when you do this as long as you set them all up with the same SSID, password, and settings, but on different channels. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend them for that configuration. I decided as a last ditch effort to buy this controller. It advertises the ability to use fast roaming technology to tell certain roaming devices to go from one access point to the other as you walk around. Anyway, it did actually solve my problem. You can now walk all over my house with whatever device you want and it will always work. It never goes down, the speeds are awesome, and it was easy to configure and to maintain. To be honest, I'm not actually sure whether my system is using 802.11(k/r/v) or some other technology. All I know is that I had tons of problems with my wifi before getting this, and now I don't. It's a little hard to explain what this device does and TP-Link doesn't make it obvious. It does take control of all your access points and let you configure them from a central location instead of having to connect to each individually. I don't think of that as a huge deal. It allows you to monitor all the clients on all access points and see which is downloading how much, disconnect them, and do all sorts of other stuff. Actually, besides the monitoring of bandwidth and clients and allowing central configuration, it's hard to identify what this really does that you can't do in standalone mode without any controller. However, I can tell you that the internet experience is 100% better with this controller. I don't really understand why it's necessary or exactly how it works, but I'm really glad I got it. I recommend it to anyone who is using multiple TP-Link access points
Review: More reliable than PC SDN controller - This OC200 hardware controller is much more reliable than a PC running the Omada SDN software. And cheaper. We have TP-Link gear for wifi at our small museum, about 2 acres outdoors campus and 2 buildings connected by a bridge. We have about 35 cameras, another 15 IoTs, and 3-4 streaming TVs. Our network has 7 APs, 3 POE switches, other switches, a bridge, and an ER7206 router. We were using the Omada SDN software on a dedicated PC, but Windows updates and reboots made this setup unreliable without frequent attention. So we upgraded to this dedicated OC200 controller, which does not have Windows inside, and now things just work without needing attention. Same familiar (and great!) Omada SDN, just without any hassles.

**Q: I cannot see anywhere (unless missing it) is this gigabit?? it says 100mb on my tp-link router.**
A: 100mb for the controller itself. However it is only used to change- or monitor- Omada infrastructure, so 100mb is more than adequate.

**Q: Does this require a connection to tp-link's cloud to work or an account with their service? can it be completely managed locally?**
A: This device can be managed 100% locally without any connection to Tp-Link cloud services.

However the cloud services allows the user to manage the device and network remotely if you choose to use it.

**Q: Is the power chord/wall-plug for the micro usb port included in the box?**
A: Just received and in fact DOES NOT come with a USB power cord. Only a RJ45 cable.

**Q: Can you do fast roaming without this piece of hardware?**
A: Fast roaming are in the newer 802.11 features k/v/r. Which, likely 'r', and that is only offered when the APs are NOT in standalone mode. They need a central server to report back on devices and signal strengths and such. So the central brain can pass a signal out to that device suggesting it switch channels to a better AP as it roams. This, requires the Omada Controller. Does it need to be this "hardware" controller? No. You can run it in Windows/Linux/Docker just fine (as I do). The "hardware" version just removes a need for you to run an always on computer to run it. But it can run on any tiny little thing you've got just laying about (like a RaspberryPi or Odroid).

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Very Positive Addition to My Home Network

This device has made a very positive difference in my house. I live in a tall, brick, three story row house in Baltimore and had been eeking by with a wireless router on the first floor and wireless repeaters to spread the wireless coverage to the other floors. It was pretty un workable with devices continually losing the link or vanishing for hours. I ran Cat6 everywhere so we could at least use laptops in the bedrooms and in places on the first floor. IPhones pretty much ground to a halt if you moved around the house. I then read about the advantages of wireless access points and bought three TP Link wall plate “enterprise” Access Points (EAPs). I had to also buy a small switch to extend my Cat6 switch with some power over ethernet (PoE) ports that the EAPs need for their power. I put one EAP on each floor and in this configuration, each floor had a dedicated SSID and a stable strong signal. Our iPhones (a 10 and an 11), however, had to be continually told to reconnect to the SSID of the floor they were on, kind of a pain. I read about the OC200 as a way to remedy this without devoting a laptop to the task. The OC200 “adopts” the wired EAPs and treats them like an antenna array and issues a single SSID (or multiple wireless subnetworks if you like) that can be used all over the house. With fast roaming enabled, I can now go anywhere in the house and my iPhone tracks the strongest signal and never drops off. All the wireless devices in the house (doorbell, cameras, music devices, Alexa) now track the same SSID and use the same WEP codes and all of a sudden, everything seems to be able to discover everything else and talk to it. It even works out into the street in front of the house so I can use it in my parked car. TP-Link’s tech support helped me with this as their product literature is a little meager and assumes you are starting from scratch (and that you have a PhD in electrical engineering). It turns out for example, for the OC200 to successfully adopt the EAPs as wired devices, each EAP has to be reset to its factory state; otherwise they are adoptable manually but only as wireless devices and no single SSID wireless network emerges which is way confusing. (When you set up the EAPs without a central controller, you log into each one of them to set it up.) I also found that resetting the OC200 to trigger its setup wizard actually takes about two minutes before it has had coffee and is ready to play. Firmware versions of everything can also matter and the tech support folks pointed me to literature to confirm that my OC200 was properly configured for the EAPs I owned, thankfully everything was compatible. If you want the fast roaming feature, all your roaming gear has to be 802.11k/v/r compatible. Mine must be as it is all working smoothly.
