This closer is hydraulically controlled, with adjustable closing and latching speed to ensure the gate closes in a controlled manner and reduce damage. It is a sturdy device with a powder coated steel construction and it is easy to install as well as being supplied with full instructions. It also has an optional hold open function and it is ideal for use on garden gates, picket gates, barrier gates and lightweight doors (non fire rated). This closer installs on the top, middle or bottom of either the right or left hand of the gate. It mounts on the opening side of gate, pushing it closed. The GCTB175 is not compatible with offset hinge arrangements or arrangements that create more than 50mm between gate post and gate, as it is critical to mount the closer as close as possible to the gate's pivot point. The maximum opening angle of the garden gate closer is 90 degrees so it is important to restrict the opening of the gate to 90 degrees by fitting a gate stop or you will damage the closer. Cant say if the weather resistance is adequate. The gas piston spring has lost all pressure and the closer no longer has any closing force at all. The gate is small and, on average, it is opened about 5 to 10 times per day. Very disappointing - it was working so well. Review: Well priced and easy to install - Used on standard garden gate to close and ensure dog can’t get out. Initial adjustment was tricky setting speeds for closure and latching and at one point it stopped before latching. Re Insertion of locking pin reset the unit and allowed me to get the speeds right, so don’t despair if you don’t get it right first time. You open the gate with hinge installed 45 degrees and the you will see a plastic end cap with a hole in it. Insert screwdriver and adjust tension accordingly by turning either clockwise or anti-clockwise for the latch push. Open the gate fully and adjust the same way for the swing. **Q: is this suitable for pivot hinged gates** A: Not quite sure what you mean by 'pivot hinges' but as long as you get the axis of the gate hinges and the pivot (ie 'hinge') of the closer in line or very nearly in line then it should work ok. Hope you understand what I'm getting at. **Q: How far do you have to screw in to position B to get the "hold open" to work?** A: On mine, the instructions about how to place the fixings were incorrect. I believe I provided this info in my review. **Q: Do you only need one of these per gate?** A: On small and light gates one is fine but for larger you need to fit two. I had tried several springs etc which were not powerful enough to close the gate. This closes the gate smoothly and has a soft closure but enough strength to engage the latch. Easy to install and adjust. It also dampens closure so that the wind can no longer slam the gate.
