It's not several shades lighter, and I don't think you can get any type of platinum blonde with this but it does lighten my hair from an ashy blonde/cool light brown to a medium light honey blonde. It does lighten your hair and it does cover grey completely and dye it permanently as long as you put enough on and leave it on a good while.
