**Q: If it's not a stupid question, you just need phono cables and speakers [pair of ..] and then you're good to go, right?**
A: Just a pair of speakers and speaker cables are needed to get the system working. If you want to plug any other equipment into it, then RCA/Digital cables are needed. A phono pre-amp will be needed if plugging a turntable into one of the analogue inputs.
