They just plastic. My mistake was not reading the details thoroughly to see that they are 2 3' sections that you have to put together to make it 6'. However, they claim repeatly that they are plastic coated steel when they are not. There is no metal anywhere in these stakes. Sending back for a refund. The first time I ordered, I only received 25 3-ft poles with no connectors. I called and they told me they would replace the order with the correct number of poles and joint connectors and when I received the new package I only received 25 3-ft poles with no joints AGAIN. Amazon assisted me and I was not charged for the second package however I still don't have joints. They sent me 25 of the bottom 3-foot segments - useless for my needs. I registered a complaint and gave one star; however, after explaining the problem within about 2 weeks, they sent me another order of 50- 3-foot segments, 25 bottoms and 25 tops so iI have my 25 6-foot stakes and I am delighted and now give them 5 stars. Small problem - i still have 25 3-foot bottoms that i cannot use.
