This keeps the END firmly in the bottom of the container of water so that it doesn't "float" and not thus not be able to have a continuous supply of water. For me, these work great. I've used these things for quite a while, and never had a problem with them. So if one of them is still giving you problems, it might be defective. **Q: how high will the water lift with the bottle on the floor and the hose intake at the bottom of the bottle?** A: The instructions are to put the water reservoir level with the top of the soil for optimum watering. The water intake will be slower if you put the water source lower than that. To answer your question, if the water source is at the bottom of the pot where the intake valve of the Blumat rests, you'll get the least water intake. I would put the water source no lower than midway between the top of the soil and the bottom of the pot. I've used this particular junior Blumat when I was away for 30 days using 2 Blumats on each 13"dia. x 12" H pot with a water pail of about the same size to hold the water reservoir and it performed really well. I came back home with the top of the soil moist and my plants healthy. I'm not sure what you mean by hose intake -- do you mean the intake valve that is attached to the Blumat that rests at the bottom of the water reservoir? Use several Blumats if you have a large pot and make sure your water reservoir is big enough. I used mine indoors, unattended, so I don't know how it will perform outdoors, but I imagine it will perform as well as it should, provided you fill the reservoir regularly when the water level runs low. Please read the instructions carefully that comes with the package. Definitely recommend this excellent product! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works great - follow instructions *by A***S on March 17, 2023* I purchased these in advance of a vacation away from our home in sunny Arizona, and I am glad I did. We were away for five nights and my plants did great. This is now my standard way to water this plant, whether or not I am home. I am glad I ordered these early so that I could fiddle with the water levels in the water source and get it just right for each plant. These work, as long as you follow instructions. Some adjustments may be needed after your initial setup. Here are the steps: 1) Soak the spikes, tubes, and lids in water for a day. Soak all of the pieces, not just the spikes. 2) Dig a hole in your soil the size of the spike using a garden tool or spoon. Do NOT use the spike itself as it is made of fired clay and is relatively fragile. 3) Put your soaked spike in the soil. 4) Put the connected tube and the end of the tube in a water container such as a vase. 5) Thoroughly water your plant. 6) To increase water flow from spikes, raise the water vessel higher by putting it on a pedestal, box, or whatever. I didn't feel like water was getting to my plants at first so I raised the water vessel higher and the result was that the water overflowed out of the planter dish. I readjusted the levels on various plants to avoid that and saw that the plant was getting watered without the added elevation. Your mileage may vary. It makes sense to set these up a few days or a week before you need it to be working. Voila!
