For an indoor gymnastics event I would look at something in the 3x - 8x magnification the 42 refers to the field of view. This might be okay for a gym depending on where you are sitting and size of the gym. **Q: Is there a screw port on the bottom to attach a tripod?** A: Just bought this from Dicks, you have to remove the rear nikon cap to reveal the screwport, there is then an adapter that must be used to attach to tripod.
