Review: I LOVE my fair trade tagine - I love making tagines (the food) and looked for a tagine (the cooking/serving dish) for a long time. While there are a lot of inexpensive, lightly used tagines of unknown origins available, I was so happy when I found this one - the perfect choice for me. In addition to the used tagine market, you can buy new tagines from high quality manufacturers, but I just couldn’t get excited about buying such a traditional cooking dish from Emile Henri or Le Creuset, both French companies, particularly knowing that the French colonized North Africa. I wanted either a local or North African potter. Here’s why I love this tagine: 1) I particularly appreciated that it was made by Tunisian potters, since the tagine is a North African tradition. My understanding is that the vendor is a fair trade company that gives back to the craftsmen, which was important to me. (I couldn’t find any third party verification of its fair trade status and just believed them.) 2) It’s gorgeous. 3) It’s lead free. I intended to cook in it but found that it was easier and faster to cook the food in my Dutch oven or pressure cooker and then serve in this tagine. This cookware/serving dish is a piece of art that shouts special occasion while paying homage to the culinary roots of tagines. I display it on a shelf in my living room when it’s not in use because it is so beautiful.
