We wanted to mount it to the interior of the coop and, though we have power in the coop, we wanted it to run on batteries and use a timer vs. a sensor. All of our needs were met. The door to solid enough, and even locks, to keep out predators and is slow enough when closing so it won't hurt our chickens if they are coming/going when it is closing. We love this product so much we purchased another for a second coop where our peacocks live. I highly recommend this product. (You will need to purchase the door and the control unit.)
