Each shape can also pop out of the mats, so it might be useful as an educational tool, I suppose. Though at half an inch, these pieces themselves are thin, and the interconnected pieces pop out easily. Instead of putting all the pieces together and laying them flat, you can also prop up the sides (as I have done). But because the pieces are somewhat flimsy, any baby older than 3-4 months can/will easily Godzilla themselves and break out of this somewhat cramped 4 ft by 4 ft enclosure (if you lay down all the pieces flat, it is about 5 ft by 5 ft). A somewhat nice feature is that you can create cubes out of the pieces, and that can potentially be a fun toy for an older baby/toddler (though the shape pieces fall out much too easily).
