Yasmin the Superhero

Fantastic content and structure!
I bought this book for my first grade daughter both because she’s excited about early chapter books and I was excited about a Pakistani protagonist in the story. This book exceeded my hopes!First, the story is excellent. Being a superhero is defined not by beating a villain, but by helping people in the neighborhood- with math, gathering dropped groceries, and getting a stuck ball. I love the message! And it was a great window to talk about opportunities for my kids to help others.I also deeply appreciate the diversity of characters. From Yasmin and her family experience (and the accompanying Urdu glossary to explain terms), to the visible diversity in her neighborhood (every family Yasmin engages with appears to identify differently racially), the superhero story normalizes characters who are so often considered “other” in children’s books- at least in America. The story isn’t about diversity, but that is part of its power. The illustrations are excellent, and I think give this book a great range from a read-aloud to 3 and 4-year olds to early readers excited about chapter books and for whom great illustrations keep them engaged. Finally, the tools for parents or teachers at the back of the book are just outstanding. I wound up actually reading this with my 4-year-old son and having a very lively discussion on the questions about superheroes at the end. Then we went through the glossary and practiced words. And I personally appreciated the informational text at the end.I think this book is excellent for kindergarten and first grade classrooms and for homes everywhere! I’ve now bought the whole series!

lovely empowering stories
At last a "minority" character in a secular setting. Lovely text and illustrations. The stories are simple with a climax ... I like the Pakistani terms here and there . They are few enough to not obstruct the flow of the story, but nice to show my kids that there are different cultures/ways/languages to say things. I bought the whole collection. Both my 5 twins, boy and girl, loved them.

I thought it would be longer
We first read "Meet Yasmin." Which is a collection of 4 stories so it lasted a while with my second grader. But this one is just one story and you finish it in one night. Great stories though.
