Incredible sound, but a couple of quirks.
Long, wordy review, so the quick and dirty is the iHaper HP1 RULES! Read on for details. This journey actually started with me buying a set of the Senheiser HD1 headphones ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NBWT16K/ref=twister_B06XJC5C7V?_encoding=UTF8&th=1 ). I listened to my favorite jazz albums using the HD1 with my old Sony NWZ-S616F Walkman. I was blown away. The sound was so far above and beyond my old Sony MDR-V200 headphones. I then listened to some of my favorite symphonies........un-listenable due to the DAC on the Walkman. Sustained strings were obviously being taken out of the music in quieter moments. I encoded my symphonies with the flac codec and loaded them on the Walkman. Ughhh! The Walkman couldn't read flac files. I then loaded the flac files an Onn W6 media player ( https://www.amazon.com/ONN-Bluetooth-Pedometer-Player-Sport/dp/B00ZOXLKDY/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?keywords=onn+w6&qid=1554308760&s=electronics&sr=1-1-fkmrnull ) on hand that I used with my bluetooth speakers. Wow! The detail was amazing, but the dynamics were actually better on the Sony. I decided at this point that it was time for an upgrade. After a few weeks of research I pulled the trigger. My needs were simply this:• Play flac files.• Be able to push even inefficient headphones.• At least 8Gb of memory upgradeable to at 64GB.• At least 10 hours of straight play time.• Be compact.Enter the iHaper HP1. $70 might seem too much for some people for a simple box the only plays music. Look around on just Amazon, and you’ll see hi-res players from $20 to almost $1000. For me, I could justify $70 as long it sounds good. And good doesn’t even come close to how the iHaper HP1 sounds.Audio quality:Playing flac music files through the HP1 is a revelation! Detail I expected. Dynamics I expected. The iHaper HP1 combined with my HD1 headphones brings out the texture of the instruments playing. I am hearing things that I have never heard before on my Apogee ribbon speakers. But my music does not sound cold and clinical. In fact this is what I love (and I do mean LOVE!) about my new set-up. I am re-discovering my music! The emotion…….the majesty……the humor…….the tradegy……….And simply the raw power of any music I load. It’s all there plus a bag of Fritos!Funcionality:I really like the simplicity of the HP1. You’ve got an On/Off button on top. There are three buttons on front: last track/beginning of track, next track, & back screen. Then there’s the scroll wheel on the side that acts as the select button. The scroll/select wheel works, but it feels like it should be bigger. My headphones are pretty efficient, but if yours are not you can adjust that. In the Play Settings, go to AMP Level. You can turn up the gain for less efficient headphones. For my Sennheiser HD1 headphones my AMP level is set at 6 out of 13. My volume level is mostly at 11 out 31. There is and EQ function; I don’t use this. This player does not have Bluetooth functionality. For some this might be a big deal. The iHaper HP1 is not perfect, though. My biggest gripe is that there is a noticeable gap between each track. Most music you’ll never notice. But if the music flows from one track to the next, you can’t help but notice. I hope this is something that can be fixed with a simple software upgrade in future. I have my HP1 set up so that the screen goes dark after 30 seconds. With the screen dark, you cannot access any of the controls until you tap the On/Off button. Once you press ANY of the controls, you should be able to control the unit.So to sum it up:Plus:• Plays most of the lossless codecs.• Sounds incedible.• Long battery life.• Compact• Included 8GB micro flash card upgradeable to 128GBNeutral:• Scroll/select wheel.• Screen size.Minus:• Gap between tracks.• The need to press the On/Off button to activate the controls. There you have it. I listen to my iHaper every day, and I am very, very happy with my purchase. Hope this helps someone with their decision.

happy customer
great mp3 player (and support for hi-res... if I want). I have dozens of USB charging devices but this is my only one with USB-C. It's a nicer connection but one more standard to support... I'll have to keep track of the cable. I'm very happy with the output and the ability to change the Amp Level to drive my 250-ohm studio headphones. I love the roller for a volume control instead of buttons. (right-hand thumb seems very ergonomic for volume). I had 64GB of MP3 on a card when it arrived and it took the card and started playing immediately. Removable storage is great! Create another collection on a computer while still being able to use the device with another card. The included 8GB card wouldn't work and I could not reformat it. I threw it in the trash. As you can see, not perfect but I still rated 5 stars for what you get for the money.

It's all about the sound quality
Bit by bit I am upgrading each component in my sound reproduction experience. I found a great pair of headphones. I am re-re-replacing my favorite albums with the best reissues (not always the most recent reissue). And now I have a player that is up to par with the rest! (No more weak links in my chain!) Bottom line, my new iHaper player does all the wonderful things that the ad profile claims, and that makes me a happy listener. I would purchase this player again, and that is as mighty a compliment as I can give.

There’s a reason it’s cheap
This thing is worthless, you’re better off just using your phone if you’re going to buy this thing. Few features, mediocre sound quality and missing basic codecs makes this a waste of money.

An Audiophile's dream!
I have to admit, I was like most people when seeing something like this and thought, why would I need an MP3 player in 2019?? Well...that's because this isn't an "MP3 Player", it's so much more. We'll get to that in a minute.I can't talk about this player without first bringing up the physical size of it. I posted a pic next to my OnePlus 6T for reference. I actually thought it would be much bigger than it actually is! For starters, I would way rather workout or carry this for music than lug around my phone. Not to mention, today's smartphones are over that $1000 mark, who wants to risk getting that wet, dropping it, etc while doing something? I know what you are going to say...but there is no bluetooth??!! Yeah, exactly. Some of you may not know, but wireless anything isn't known for being the best quality. There is generally signal loss, interference, etc that gets in the way of the music. If you don't care about quality, by all means, keep using your jack-of-all-trades master-of-none handheld computer.Anyway, one of the first things I noticed was that it's USB-C! All of my devices have gone that way and it's nice to have this one follow the same path.Turn it on is really easy and the screen is easy to read. The scroll wheel on the back is easy to use and to select menu items. One of the big features of this player is the fact it has a customizable EQ. It does have built in modes for certain genres, but if you think you can tune it better, you can adjust to your hearts content. Definitely something your smartphone can't usually do! As far as volume goes, you can actually adjust the volume in multiple places. It has the main volume, of course, but there is an "AMP Level" which allows you to turn it up even more. What's even more convenient, you can set a default volume level - it can either be what you had it on last or you can customize it yourself.Music sorting is done in a variety of ways. It can be viewed in the folder, by category, and by favorites.I also can't forget to mention that it comes with an 8gb MicroSD card which is awesome! I'm glad it has removable storage but even more glad that it actually came preloaded so I didn't have to buy one myself. After I got it, I immediately went on the hunt for FLAC music to reintroduce my ears to lossless music. Oh man, was I not disappointed! I played this on my Bose QC25, which probably is the limitation of this setup, but the sound was amazing. So crystal clear, especially if you compare to something like Spotify or SoundCloud. The depth of sound...it's just different. If you love clean and clear music, I would definitely give this a listen. Remember, make sure you upgrade your music source as well for the best results!
