The Arabian Nights, Volume II: More Marvels and Wonders of the Thousand and One Nights

This is a classic for a reason. Excellent!

This review is of the Signet Classics Arabian Nights Volume 2. A fun read, an interesting look into the thoughts, ambitions, and fears of people of the Middle East/Central Asia back when—and in many ways probably persist today. Volume Two of The Thousand and One Nights is much bawdier and sexual than Volume One, but I felt more enjoyable. The tales each seemed shorter, but didn’t appear to drag one as much. Some of the sexual language and violence was a little crude, but before you get offended remember these tales are from a different time. The Fables section at the end was an interesting and fresh inclusion into this volume; I liked the recurrent theme of warning about authoritarianism. Circling back to the start of the book, John Barth’s introduction was one of the most memorable I’ve read in any Signet Classic, bordering on slap stick comedy. It definitely set the tone and had me ready to dive in. Zack Zipes overall adaption of these two volumes and his scholarly afterwords are also, of course, commendable. He clearly put a lot of time and thought into his work to make something enjoyable and enduring for generations to come. For further enjoyment, I’d suggest reading The Decameron by Boccaccio as well as Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. All of these works are interrelated and it’s interesting to see how the tales traveled and were complied by those influential authors. Bottom line: a fun a clearly timeless read! I hope this review helps.

This is a companion volume to the Arabian Nights Volume I, again Sir Richard F. Burton'sunexpurgated translation(the uncut version!) As it says on the back of the book ...sensualmystery...erotic tales are in this one. This is nice to have in addition to The Arabian NightsVolume I.
