Every home should have one
After yet another rare but wholly unexpected power cut that ruined an entire evening's planned TV viewing, I decided to research back-up generators. The Poweroak 400 stood out above the competition due to its small size, versatility and relatively large battery capacity. I raised a technical question with the helpful supplier who responded with half an hour, placed my order and only two days later the device arrived. First impression was how compact and light it is which means that storage is not an issue. I activated the master power button then subsequently ran several short tests that included individually running my 42" LED TV then a pair of CD players, all via the two AC outputs before charging my tablet through the USB sockets. The TV and CD players operated as if connected to the grid and the tablet charged as normal. Power drawn was accurately shown on the LCD displays except when running the smaller CD player that has a rating of less than 20 watts and displayed zero consumption. Recharging was undertaken via the mains charger supplied, again after activating the master power button. (otherwise excellent instructions omit this requirement) I noted that the 48 watt initial charge tapers down to 9 watts for the last hour before charging automatically ceases. My short tests confirm that the Poweroak 400 is exactly what I need as it will run my TV for at least five hours as well as recharging my tablet and powering my router during these annoying power outages. Whilst the mains charger is probably all that most householders would ever use, I do intend to buy a 100 watt PV solar panel to give an optional method of recharging in case of extended supply losses. The instructions confirm that Poweroak has a built-in control circuitry for this purpose. In conclusion, this is a versatile and sophisticated charger that can provide a wide range of functions in addition to those I tested, such as jump-starting a car or being recharged by a vehicle's cigarette socket. The Poweroak 400 is ideal for camping, motor homes and as a domestic mains back-up within the limits of a 400 watt-hour battery. Every home should have one. Update on 10th May 2022. As I was so impressed with the first Poweroak which has seen me through a number of mains outages during the last 4 years, I have bought a second one from the same seller. It arrived a week ahead of schedule and was beautifully packaged as its predecessor, which still looks and works as new.

The Tesla of Generators!
OK, so I'll admit that I'm a PowerOak fan. I love their stuff. I travel with it and they've treated me extremely well despite the abuse I put them through. We all want power. We all want to watch tv at the tailgate and with that we have to have power. This usually means lugging a heavy, noisy, gas sucking generator out to the tailgate. That has never been my favorite thing to do, but now there is an easier way with what I call the Tesla of generators. The PowerOak 400wh power generator is a solar powered generator ready to take your tailgate to a cleaner and greener level. It can gives you outdoor portable power that can help power lights, phones, laptops, TVs, blenders and much more. It sports features such as surge protection, short circuit protection, temperature control and pure sine wave. To get started you simply charge the generator up at home, as it is essentially a large power station that can store the power and then output it to a variety of energy thirsty products. There is a battery % indicator, along with Input Watts and Output Watts on the digital display panel. The PowerOak powerhouse has 4 USB outputs and 2 AC output to push the power to your devices. When I saw that this had been released, I decided I needed one. Last fall I moved to New England, and over the winter had several friends lose power as a result of winter storms. I decided this would make a decent stand-in until I could decide if I need a real generator or not. I was also planning to use it for camping, tailgating, and the like. Since I'm planning to use this in an emergency, I thought I should put it through it's paces a bit to make sure it wasn't going to leave me high and dry. The first thing I did when it got to my house was plug it in to charge. I'm not sure how long it took; I just left it overnight. The next day, I took it out and started playing with it. I started out easy- I set it out at a BBQ and let people use it to charge phones and whatnot. Then I started ramping things up a bit, and used it to power a boom box. shop light, some string lights on the patio, and then (just to see if we could) a box fan that was in the mud room. The fan was a bit much- while it did run, it wasn't quite as fast as when plugged into the wall, so we decided that was probably the limit. Still, and impressive unit. Over the next week, my wife used it constantly to charge her phone and other small things. I never plugged it back in for a recharge in the entire week. I had originally planned this for emergency power, and boy does it deliver. I also went ahead and ordered the solar panel, but haven't played with that one yet. I'll write something up on it when I do. I've included a few pics, but the bottom line is this: this thing is absolutely worth it.

Good Battery - USB Ports Break Easily
This is a good battery and works well, it's also small enough to fit into smaller spaces. It's only real drawback is that the USB ports on the front break easily. They are dual USB ports and the plastic gat between the ports is brittle, so it easily gets cracked and broken if the USB cable is plugged into the battery and gets jogged even a small amount.

Seems very good.Have also charged it with a solar panel.
Ordered this product a few weeks ago, charged it up and everything is ok. Powers my household fan well and will do for about 10 hrs. Have also tried it with my handheld mixer, and it will also power my electric blanket for camping Connecting to a solar panel is easy, you just need a pair of exstension leads, easily to find on amazon. I bought a Renogy 100 watt flexible panel and have tested it outside at 7pm and it was charging at 35/50 watts. I will try it later at midday for max sunlight. Just to be clear, you don’t need anything between the solar panel and the poweroak, just the exstension leads, male to female,,female to male.Since my Renogy solar panel arrived (100 watts flexible) I tested it on the 24th and 25th of June @ 26C midday with a cloudless sky.I was getting 55/60 watts charge in those perfect conditions. There is not one other person in the reviews who mentions solar charging. So don’t expect 100% rendement from a panel even in almost perfect conditions. Therefore I would suggest a 180/200 watt panel, and you can always cover a part of it up if your charging wattage becomes too high. Afterthought. When I charged this with my solar panel it was 80% full so maybe the inbuilt charge controller was only allowing a charge of 60 watts.I am going to buy a multimeter so will test again soon and post the results here. ATTENTION.The Anderson connection on the battery is on the very small side and if you’re using extension cables when charging via solar panel(so you can have the panel in the sun and the battery in the shade or your car)the cables have the tendency to dislocate as they are heavy and put pressure on the connection. You can counter this by laying the battery on its back.Would be better if the connection was more robust,I.e.bigger.UPDATE. I charged this early March 2022 when we had a sunny spell,I hung my solar panel out of the window, connected my shaver, phone and portable fan to the poweroak and charged them all for free, control panel gave charge rate as 65 watts. The Sun was lowish in the sky,13:00 to17:00 but the angle was just right to get a good charge.

Long term review - mixed feelings
I've used this for about 1.5 years now and it has been mixed. Positives: The price per kWh is good, it's one of the cheapest I could find (although still an expensive product!) Charging works well, it appears to hold charge for a long period. Jump start feature has proved useful and is plenty powerful. UK plug ports and the cigarette lighter socket work well. On the less positive side: The USB ports are extremely fragile and all of mine are now broken. Any amount of force up or down on the USB cable will easily break the thin piece of metal between the ports. I'd suggest avoiding only having 1 usb device plugged in. If you put something into the other port then it should provide more strength. It's a poor design. The circular ports would have been useful except the manual provides no detail as to the sizing of these ports and I've measured with calipers and tried various plugs around the size measured and none have fit. I emailed the supplier but they didn't give me any information. It's relatively easily damaged and scratched, not overly useful for something which gets taken out in a van and is used for camping. I wouldn't buy this product again, there are other options out there which look to have avoided these obvious design flaws for not much more money.

Works well with Golabs 100w panel
Lightweight, well made and easy to use. It's a little weird in that you have to turn it on to charge it, just plugging in the mains charger or solar panel won't cause it to charge unless it's switched on. Shame it's not a LiFePO4 battery and doesn't have USB-C but when I got it at £230, you can't really complain when it's got a 300w pure sine inverter for that price. You can charge it and power devices at the same time which is nice and the display is very clear and sunlight readable being LCD. As others have mention it's a pity it doesn't show battery percentage rather than 5 bars and an estimate time to run would have been good based on current load - charge input.

Excellent product
This is my second power bank. I am SO impressed with the first one that I decided it made sense. I live in a very remote area which is subject to numerous power outages, and it makes life so much easier if you have backup. This unit is so sleek to look at that it doesn't look out of place when in use indoors (see photo). The biggest thing for me though, is that it seems to hold charge really well between times. This is important, as often the power will fail with no warning, and therefore your backup has to be ready to use. Very easy to use, love that I can also use to charge car battery if it dies. Well worth the money! Have no idea why amazon want me to rate the items 'thickness' and 'stretch', neither of which are qualities relevant to the item....just weird!

Update - It took a little time, but they have replaced the product and all is as it should be.
I did extensive research and this product appeared to be a good option and for the first six times we used it to power wildlife cameras for three hours at a time. Then the unit would not charge. On contacting the seller, we are advised to buy various charging cables, none of which helped. We have now been in protracted correspondance which seems aimed at delaying. In short, when it works it's good, but six lots of three hours seems rather expensive for what is basically a battery. We now have a replacement and as stated previously, when it functions properly it is a good product and I am now happy with the product.
